Tour de Mantis? Tustel Ico’s Macro Photography is Buggy

It’s no secret that developments in the realm of digital photography have made experts out of laymen. What was previously the purview of professionals who understood the difference between ISO and ASA has morphed into an avocation exercised by photography enthusiasts the world over. As with any pastime or passion, however, the wheat will always, eventually, find its way free of the chaff. Indonesian photographer Tustel Ico is definitely amongst the wheat—and his work gives new meaning to the term “shutter bug.” Using a specialized macro lens and a swarm’s worth of patience, Ico photographs insects in their natural environs, sometimes catching them in situations where the scene is ripe with whimsy (as in the case of the mantis on the “bike”).
