The Bird Apartment — Collective Housing for Birds and Humans

Designer Oki Sato and his team at Nendo have created The Bird Apartment, which provides collective housing for birds and one person. The treehouse was designed for the Ando Momofuku Center, a facility devoted to promoting and increasing access to nature activities. The facility is located in a forest in Komoro City, Japan.

On one side of the treehouse there is a ladder that leads to a single large opening and provides humans with access into the structure. On the other side of the façade the treehouse has 78 entrances to nest spaces for birds. From the human area you can peer into the birds nest spaces through tiny observation holes.
