Father Photographs the Unique World of His Autistic Son

San Francisco-based photographer Timothy Archibald began photographing the habits of his autistic son, Elijah, when he was 5 years old. He wanted to capture the unique perspective of his son so he could show them to behavioural specialists, but the project quickly grew into so much more.

The photography sessions became a bonding experience between father and son, and allowed them to create their own visual language to communicate with each other when there are no words they can both understand. The resulting portraits helped Timothy not only understand the role of himself as a father but, most importantly, to accept his son’s differences.
