The Black Desert House in California

Architecture firm Oller & Pejic, in collaboration with Creative Director Marc Atlan, has designed the ‘Black Desert House’, a desert retreat with impressive views of Joshua Tree National Park in California. It’s not often that you see a black house, but the bold choice in color definitely offers a distinct contrast from the surrounding desert landscape.

The house is built around a central courtyard, which is set to a backdrop of black walls, midnight quartz, high-gloss anthracite and darkened steel.

“Perched like a stealth bomber on a cliffside, at the foot of a dramatic outcrop of prehistoric boulders, the Black Desert House is a unique minimalist hideaway… The architecture spirals down to the level of the kitchen and dining room, for all intents and purposes the central cockpit of the house, and then descends via deeply tiered steps into the vast sunken living room.”
