A Father Sends His Son’s Toy Train Into Space

In an awesome gift from father to son, Ron Fugelseth sent his son’s favourite toy, a “Thomas the Tank Engine” train named Stanley, into space. Stanley the train was sent up in a weather balloon and was secured to an HD camera and an old cell phone for GPS. It took Stanley one hour to reach the stratosphere and 20 minutes to fall back down to Earth. Ron and his son then used the GPS to locate him 27 miles away in a corn field.

When Ron returned home he put this video together documenting the experience, and animated Stanley’s face using After Effects and Photoshop to bring him to life, much the same way he imagines his son to see him. Visit Ron on Facebook or Twitter to learn more about the project.
